Door Project along with artist’s statement:
No. !
For my ‘door project’ I decided to something a bit more representational of me personally rather than a struggle I’ve overcome or certain experience I’ve had. There was, however, a point in time that I realized I couldn’t be like everyone else – not that I have to be different, but I just have to be myself – which is what I chose to incorporate into my door.
It was that exact reason I chose to leave a doorknob off of my door; no one needs to be like me or see into my world - they can take what they want from examining the door itself. The repeated exclamation motif was used to represent me (the colorful, neon painted exclamation) versus everyone else (the exclamation insets already made into the door.) I chose that particular motif as a sense of power and determination; and because it’s more of a statement within itself. The door is free-standing to represent my independence and self reliance – while I have certain people I know I can count on, I only depend on myself when it really comes down to it. If you knew me, you’d understand that this door IS me.
When it comes to my inspiration for this piece, and a lot of my art in general, I’d have to give credit to Jackson Pollock. His most well-known works seem like they’re just paint thrown onto canvases, when there’s so much more to them. He practices free-formed painting, while maintaining rhythm in his technique – which most people don’t see right off the bat. Like Pollock’s work, I feel like I take some in depth interpretation before I’m fully understood.
